Town of Morehead City
The town of Morehead City is truly a charming place to be. It has much to offer both the vacationer as well as a resident. There are several marine research labs here in town, as well as a great community college. Morehead City is named for John Motley Morehead. He was the North Carolina govenor from 1841 to 1845. He knew Morehead City had a vital role to play. He and his associates helped extend North Carolina’s railroad from Goldsboro to the coast. In 1857 there was a public auction in which 150 lots were up for grabs. They all sold three days after the railroad’s completion celebration.
In 1899 Morehead City saw an influx of new residents. These new residents were displaced to Morehead City following the great hurricane of that same year. The storm drove them from their whaling community on Shackleford Banks. When North Carolina govenor Kerr Scott was able to get a large bond approved Morehead City’s place as an important economical asset was assured with the funding of a port terminal.
